Money Smart Mom Names Top Coupon Websites
Airdrie, Alberta. According to the Coupon Industry Association of Canada, there are 3.6 billion coupons distributed every year, but only 3 per cent are redeemed.
Sarah Deveau, author of Money Smart Mom: Financially Fit Parenting, is one of that 3 per cent, and is surprised the number of coupon cutters isn’t higher. “Canadian families are definitely still cutting coupons,” she says. “Or more likely these days, they’re printing them from online websites or e-newsletters.”
Deveau’s book is a guide for Canadian families in need of a little money smarts, for those wondering how they'll be able to afford kids, where to find extra cash for RESPs, or how to handle the reduction in income maternity leave entails. She feels sourcing out the best price on an item you intend to purchase is important for families on a budget. “It’s just wasteful to buy something for $9.99 that could be purchased across the street for $7.96, or that could have been had for $6.50 with a coupon you didn’t download. Those pennies and dollars really add up.”
Knowing that families are busier than ever, and may not have time to scour newspapers and flyers for coupons, Deveau has compiled a list of her top five coupon websites. “These are Canadian sites with features such as emails delivered directly to your inbox with deals you’ll use – they are great resources for frugal families.”
With solid research from a mom of three who has been there, done that financially, plus tips from moms in a variety of different financial situations, Money Smart Mom: Financially Fit Parenting helps families get on the right track financially. The book is available in Canada at Chapters Indigo books. Money smart Mom has been featured in the Globe and Mail, Calgary Herald, Blush Mom magazine, Mompreneur Magazine, and many more print media outlets. She has been interviewed by dozens of radio and television stations across Canada, offering parents advice on back to school shopping, saving money through meal planning, Christmas on a budget, and much more.

Airdrie, Alberta (August 6, 2010). Who knew kids could grow out of all of their clothing, and lose all of their school supplies in the six weeks since school let out in June? “Of course they didn’t,” says Sarah Deveau. “But many parents automatically shop as though they had.” Deveau, author of Money Smart Mom: Financially Fit Parenting, insists that back to school shopping does not have to break the bank. She offers the following tips to parents looking to spend less this year on clothing and school supplies. Get the kids involved. If your children are involved in every step of the process, they’re less likely to badger and whine for items they understand are not in the budget. They’ll also ensure you don’t waste money buying items they’ll refuse to wear. Compile an inventory. Empty the closets and scour the house for last year’s pencil crayons and binders. Don’t forget to check the basement or anywhere else you may have stashed clothing bought at end of season sales previously. Once you know what your kids have, you can… Make a list of needs. Decide what items are needed to bulk up last year’s wardrobe and school supplies, and what can be bought later in after-Christmas sales. Set a budget. Knowing what you can afford to spend will ensure you’re not still paying off a credit card balance long after your kids have outgrown the items. Shop around. Keep an eye on flyers and check out the loss leaders, especially when it comes to school supplies. While large discount stores might have the overall best price, certain items can be much cheaper when office supply stores price them low to get you in the doors. “There’s no need to buy each child a whole new wardrobe and a backpack full of sparkly new school supplies just because September 1 is approaching,” says Deveau. “Smart shoppers know what they already have and can make do with, then shop the sales to fill in the gaps. Reigning in spending on supplies and clothing can allow parents to make bigger contributions to Registered Education Savings Plans, which is a much better investment in their children’s schooling.” Money Smart Mom: Financially Fit Parenting is a financial guide for Canadian families in need of a little money smarts. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Airdrie, Alberta (April 16, 2010). There’s no doubt Canadian families are feeling the pinch these days, and there’s a new interest in an old-fashioned habit – pinching pennies. After all, raising children is expensive, isn’t it?
It doesn’t have to be, says Sarah Deveau, author of Money Smart Mom: Financially Fit Parenting. Available April 27, the book is a guide for Canadian families in need of a little money smarts. It’s for those wondering how they'll be able to afford kids, where to find extra cash for RESPs, or how to handle the reduction in income maternity leave entails. Deveau published her first lifestyle financial guide, Sink or Swim: Get Your Degree Without Drowning in Debt (Dundurn, 2003) after graduating from the University of Calgary. “With Sink or Swim, I combined research with personal stories to impart the message that students could graduate without an enormous debt load. A few short years later, I was searching for books that would help me figure out how to navigate the material expenses of having children as well as the bigger financial issues, such as reduced income on maternity leave.” Finding little, Deveau decided to write the book she wished she had been able to buy at the bookstore. “Actually, I wanted to write the book I wished I could have borrowed from the library!” says Deveau. She began researching and writing in between having three daughters in four years, and opening Cater Tot Consignment, a children's consignment boutique in Airdrie, Alberta. With solid research from this mom of three who has been there, done that financially, plus tips from moms in a variety of different financial situations, Money Smart Mom: Financially Fit Parenting helps families get on the right track financially. To request a review copy of the book, email sarah@moneysmartmom.ca with your complete mailing address. Interested in booking Sarah for an interview? Contact Sarah at (403) 829-5705.
